Finland has been ranked first in an international comparison of sustainable development, done by the UN and the Bertelsmann Foundation. The ranking is based on the progress made by countries toward the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development goals.
Finland has earned the first place by achieving or nearly achieving the UN Sustainable Development goals regarding poverty alleviation, health, education, water, energy, reducing inequality, peace, and the rule of law. Sanna Marin, the Prime Minister of Finland, states that this is a great achievement and the result of long-term work and the contribution of all of Finnish society.
However, Finland is still facing challenges in the fight against climate change, the need for more sustainable consumption and production patterns, and halting biodiversity loss. According to Marin, the focus right now is on figuring out how to ensure the well-being of people within the limits of the planet’s carrying capacity.
