Finland’s main strengths were identified as lifelong learning, public-private co-publications, and collaboration between small and medium enterprises. Moreover, compared to the year prior, there have been notable increases in business process innovators, sales of innovative products, and broadband penetration. While scoring far above average, Finland has room to improve when it comes to resource productivity, government support for business R&D, medium and high-tech goods exports, and tertiary education of its population.

UPM received high scores on the categories of Environment, Labour & Human Rights, and Ethics & Sustainable Procrurement, leading to the highest ‘Platinum score’ from the globally-known EcoVadis Business Sustainability Ratings. Only 1% of all the 90 000 companies assessed received such high score. UPM improved its own rating from the previous years’, receiving a score of 87/100. According to Sami Lundgren, VP Responsibility at UPM, the main improvements compared to the previous year lie in the category of Labour and Human Rights, where UPM has introduced several new social responsibility targets for 2030, “focusing strongly on diversity and inclusion and fair rewarding. We have also developed our human rights due diligence processes and reporting”.

Data-based supply chain visibility can strengthen trust in sustainable solutions, which is needed as a mix of raw materials, both recycled or renewable and fossil materials may be processed together. The companies will use Circularise’s blockchain-based supply chain traceability software, which allows them to verify where materials come from and how and where they were processed.

The software creates a digital twin for the physical material, which stores information on the used materials throughout the value chain. The stored information enables all value chain parties to keep track of the material.
